Physics Latam Seminar Weekly Schedule (Nov. 19 - Nov. 22)
Greetings!
📌 Tuesday, November 19 | 10 - 12 pm GMT-4
Title: A-model Topological String Theory, Part 1 (in English)
Speaker: Prof. Chiu-Chu Melissa Liu from Columbia University
Part 2 - 4 will be given on November 26, 28, and 29.
Chiu-Chu Melissa Liu is a professor of mathematics at Columbia University. Her research interests include algebraic geometry and symplectic geometry. Liu earned her Ph.D. in 2002 from Harvard University under the supervision of Shing-Tung Yau. Liu won the Morningside Silver Medal in 2007. She was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2010.
She made contributions to the foundation of open Gromov-Witten theory. With Jun Li, Kefeng Liu, and Jian Zhou, she developed a mathematical theory of the topological vertex. With Shing-Tung Yau, she proposed a new definition of quasi-local mass in general relativity and proved its positivity. With Florent Schaffhauser, she extended Michael Atiyah and Raoul Bott's work on the Yang-Mills equations over Riemann surfaces to Klein surfaces. With Bohan Fang and Zhengyu Zong, she proved the remodeling conjeture for all symplectic toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifolds.

Title: The Black Hole -- String Correspondence (in English)
Speaker: Prof. Andrea Puhm from University of Amsterdam
Prof. Andrea Puhm has been a professor at the University of Amsterdam since 2023. She earned her Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from IPhT in 2013 under the supervision of Prof. Iosif Bena. She previously held faculty and postdoctoral positions at Ecole Polytechnique, UC Santa Barbara, and Harvard University.
Her research focuses on celestial amplitudes, black hole physics, and AdS/CFT. Prof. Puhm is the recipient of many awards, including the ERC Starting Grant (2020–2025) and the Black Hole Initiative Fellowship at Harvard (2016–2019).
